(Pant, Pant, Pant)

10 out of 10 House Sparrows agree: IT'S REALLY HOT OUTSIDE!

And to think, I didn't even know until a couple of days ago that birds pant to cool down. Thanks for the new knowledge, heat wave!

(Current temperature: 101°F, with a heat index of 115°F)

  1. Amazing photo! I once saw baby Great Blue Herons wuffling to cool themselves as they stood in nests exposed to the blazing sun. But I could never get such a photo as you did.

  2. Wow, it was strange enough seeing these small birds panting -- what a sight it must have been to see birds as big and imposing as herons (even baby herons) with their beaks gaping! It's good to know that birds have some defenses against the hot weather and/or sun.

  3. I've seen birds in my parents' backyard in Phoenix do this quite a bit - they literally dig themselves down into the dirt under the trees (getting under ground level even a teeny bit must be cooler) and just sit there with their beaks open.

Just discovered via the stats page for my blog that you're following me. Thanks for the link!
