First Flowers

I'm not crazy; it's still way too early for spring. Even so, on my walk in Naugatuck State Forest this afternoon, I saw our first wildflowers of the year:

Yep, those are definitely Skunk Cabbage blossoms! Well, technically the flowers are inside of that mottled hood (a "spathe"), and it may not have opened entirely yet, but I'm calling it: The first flowers of spring are here!

All hail the mighty Skunk Cabbage!

  1. Bah, skunk cabbage! Used to see it all the time near our old house in Tabernacle.

  2. Skunk Cabbage may be common, but it's super awesome! Did you know that it's one of the few plants that can generate heat?

  3. A welcome harbinger of spring!

  4. I was just thinking about skunk cabbage on my hike on Thursday - wondering if they were down in the swampy areas of the Giant. Now I'll definitely have to go check :-)
