Big Birds Overhead

Here is maybe my worst picture ever, but I think you can make out some key characteristics of this bird -- there were two of these creatures circling high over our house this afternoon:

Yes, that's a Bald Eagle. (A really far away, super zoomed-in Bald Eagle.)

I've seen these big birds a couple of times in this area before, but they're not exactly super common. And to see two adult Bald Eagles at once, right in our yard (so to speak)... well, it was a pretty special day. :)

  1. No matter how often we see them, eagles are always a thrill. Especially when they fly right over your head.

  2. I remember the first time I saw one, about twenty years ago. I was standing in a river in my waders fishing on opening day. It was a popular spot, and there were probably a couple of dozen fellow anglers in the water when someone spotted an eagle flying upriver and alerted us. A couple of dozen heads all turned skyward and a sound erupted not unlike you'd expect to hear from the crowd at a fireworks display. It was a memorable moment.
Now, eagles are quite common in this area (western Catskills, we have a pair that has been nesting nearby for at least the last ten years) but its still a sight you point out to anyone nearby.

  3. Jackie: It's so true!

Bob: That sounds like it must've been quite the experience! I don't know if I've ever seen an eagle really up close before, outside of a zoo. Maybe someday I'll be lucky enough to be in a situation like yours. :)
